Where to Park During a Snow Ban in Portland, Maine

Snow bans in Portland are essential for keeping streets clear, but they can also be stressful if you’re not sure where to park. If you leave your car in the wrong spot, you risk getting towed, and no one wants to start their day that way.

Thankfully, Portland offers several designated parking areas during snow bans, as well as discounted rates at local garages. Here’s a quick guide to help you park safely and avoid the hassle. Brought to you by Gardner Real Estate Group, your local experts in Portland real estate.

Approved Snow Ban Parking Locations

  • Dougherty Field Skate Park – Access from St. James Street.
  • Deering Oaks Park – Left side of Tennis Court Road only.
  • Fitzpatrick Stadium Lot – Located behind the Ice Arena. Avoid parking right up against the building.
  • Portland Public School Lots – Open during snow bans except for Reiche School’s lots near the playground and pool. All vehicles must be moved by 6:30 a.m.
  • Cutter Street Lots – Located off the Eastern Promenade.
  • Beach Street Lot – Open after 8pm, off Commercial Street.
  • City Lot at Park & Commercial (Angelo’s Acre) – Across from the International Marine Terminal.
  • Western Promenade – Park along the waterside.
  • Eastern Promenade – From Turner Street to East End School, up to light pole #33.
  • Marginal Way – Between Plowman Street and the East End Wastewater Plant (waterside only). Be cautious if there’s flooding.
  • Back Cove Trail Parking – Across from Hannaford. Only park in designated snow ban spaces.
  • State Street Extension – Between Forest Avenue and Park Avenue, across from Deering Oaks. Left side only.

Consider Using Parking Garages

Many city-owned garages offer reduced rates during snow bans. This is a great option if you prefer covered parking or want to avoid digging out your car early in the morning.

City-Owned Garages:

  • Spring Street Garage
  • Elm Street Garage
  • Cumberland Avenue Garage

Where NOT to Park

Avoid the following areas to ensure you don’t get ticketed or towed:

  • Maine DOT Park & Ride Lot – Not available during snow bans.
  • Any spot that feels questionable. If you’re not sure, it’s safer to choose an approved lot or garage.

Yellow Zone Snow Ban

Portland also has a Yellow Zone Parking Ban. This parking ban is in place to allow snow hauling after major snowstorms, particularly in downtown Portland, where narrow streets need to be cleared.

The Yellow Zone includes the downtown district bounded by Cumberland Avenue, Franklin Street, Commercial Street, and State Street. Be sure to move your car from the streets in this area during the ban to avoid fines and towing.

Stay Informed

Snow bans are announced through multiple channels, including the City of Portland’s website, local news, and the Parking Ban Hotline: (207) 879-0300. Signing up for alerts is the best way to stay updated.

Knowing where to park during a snow ban can save you time and stress while helping keep Portland’s streets clear. Planning ahead will ensure you stay on the right side of the rules.
