Celebrating Ed Gardner’s Remarkable Award:    A True Good Neighbor and Advocate for Community

Celebrating Ed Gardner’s Remarkable Award

At Gardner Real Estate Group, we are beyond proud of Ed Gardner, our owner and a true visionary in Portland, Maine. His recent recognition as a 2024 Good Neighbor Award winner by the National Association of REALTORS® is a testament to the impact he has made—not only within the real estate industry but in the lives of countless individuals through his work at the Equality Community Center (ECC). Ed’s journey is one of resilience, compassion, and tireless advocacy, inspiring all of us in the Gardner group to follow his example.

The Equality Community Center: A Safe Harbor for the LGBTQ+ Community

In 2014, Ed and a group of other activists' vision for a safe, collaborative space where LGBTQ-focused nonprofits could thrive became a reality with the founding of the ECC. From the start, The ECC offered affordable rental office space, which has grown to enable 18 social justice nonprofits to work together, share resources, and build a stronger support network. The ECC is more than just a building; it’s a community where marginalized groups find friendship, advocacy, and solidarity. Ed’s commitment to creating this space comes from his own experiences and his desire to give back to those in need of a welcoming community.

Team Reflections on Ed’s Leadership

“Ed Gardner is an amazing example of community involvement and knowledgeable care.  Under his leadership, the Equality Community Center has grown from an idea to bricks and mortar to a permanent home for many marginalized communities.  Ed and his colleagues at the ECC have worked tirelessly to bring the Center about and plans for the future housing development are well underway.  Ed’s business style is a prime example of inclusion and he is an inspiration to the entire Gardner Real Estate Group team! - Kelley Craig, Broker

A Journey Rooted in Perseverance and Purpose

Ed’s real estate story began at age 17, determined to forge his path, he quit high school, and eventually bought his first property in central Maine. Despite facing 165 code violations, Ed poured himself into the project, with a few tenants joining in to help him turn the property around. From those early days, he learned what it takes to succeed in real estate and discovered his passion for helping first-time homebuyers realize their dreams. Ed grew his business and moved to Portland.

His journey also had its challenges. Coming out as gay in a small town, Ed faced prejudice and misunderstanding, even within his own family. These experiences shaped his commitment to LGBTQ+ rights, leading him to help fundraise for marriage equality in Maine in 2012. Today, he carries this same dedication into his work at the ECC, providing a supportive environment that many in the community never had before.

Building Community and Changing Lives

Ed’s work at ECC goes far beyond providing affordable office space. He was instrumental in the purchase of a 20,000-square-foot building for the ECC, brokering the deal without taking a commission and making a personal donation of $250,000. As chair of the renovation committee, he led the transformation of the building into a vibrant, accessible space with social areas, an art gallery, a thrift store, a lending library, and even an accessible shower. Thanks to Ed’s leadership, the ECC has become a cornerstone of Portland’s LGBTQ+ community, where people of all ages and backgrounds feel they belong.

A Broader Impact: Building a Legacy of Community Support

Ed’s work at ECC doesn’t just serve the people within its walls—it contributes to a larger vision of inclusivity and collaboration in Portland. The ECC has supported impactful initiatives from LGBTQ+ youth events to cultural competency workshops, which reach hundreds across Maine. This shared space fosters connections and encourages meaningful change, making Ed’s efforts a powerful force for good throughout our community.

Looking to the Future: Affordable Housing for LGBTQ+ and Allied Seniors

The ECC’s latest project, a $15 million affordable housing complex for low-income LGBTQ+ and allied seniors, is another example of his dedication to making a lasting impact. Slated for completion in 2026, the 54-unit building will be located next to the ECC, with residents invited to volunteer and engage with the center. By donating the land, valued at $1.65 million, Ed has shown once again that his commitment to community extends far beyond words.

This project will provide a much-needed housing solution for Portland’s senior population, reinforcing Ed’s vision for inclusive, community-centered spaces. It’s a vision that all of us at Gardner Real Estate Group are proud to support, knowing that it will provide security and community for seniors who need it most.
